Ex Machina focuses on the Turing Test and its useful offshoots. The Turing exam is an attempt to test whether an artificial intelligence could mimic human behavior. Ava, an artificial intelligence who can mimic human behavior, appears in the movie. She shows her creativity, as an example. It is the sequel to the movie franchise.

FAQ

Why is AI used?

Artificial intelligence refers to computer science which deals with the simulation intelligent behavior for practical purposes such as robotics, natural-language processing, game play, and so forth.

AI can also be called machine learning. This refers to the study of machines learning without having to program them.

Two main reasons AI is used are:

  1. To make our lives easier.
  2. To do things better than we could ever do ourselves.

Self-driving vehicles are a great example. AI is able to take care of driving the car for us.

Who was the first to create AI?

Alan Turing

Turing was born 1912. His father was a priest and his mother was an RN. After being rejected by Cambridge University, he was a brilliant student of mathematics. However, he became depressed. He discovered chess and won several tournaments. He was a British code-breaking specialist, Bletchley Park. There he cracked German codes.

He died on April 5, 1954.

John McCarthy

McCarthy was conceived in 1928. Before joining MIT, he studied maths at Princeton University. The LISP programming language was developed there. In 1957, he had established the foundations of modern AI.

He died in 2011.

How does AI function?

It is important to have a basic understanding of computing principles before you can understand how AI works.

Computers keep information in memory. Computers process data based on code-written programs. The code tells the computer what it should do next.

An algorithm is an instruction set that tells the computer what to do in order to complete a task. These algorithms are often written in code.

An algorithm can be considered a recipe. A recipe might contain ingredients and steps. Each step can be considered a separate instruction. One instruction may say "Add water to the pot", while another might say "Heat the pot until it boils."

How does AI work?

An algorithm is a set of instructions that tells a computer how to solve a problem. A sequence of steps can be used to express an algorithm. Each step has a condition that determines when it should execute. A computer executes each instruction sequentially until all conditions are met. This continues until the final results are achieved.

For example, suppose you want the square root for 5. It is possible to write down every number between 1-10, calculate the square root for each and then take the average. You could instead use the following formula to write down:

sqrt(x) x^0.5

You will need to square the input and divide it by 2 before multiplying by 0.5.

This is how a computer works. The computer takes your input and squares it. Next, it multiplies it by 2, multiplies it by 0.5, adds 1, subtracts 1 and finally outputs the answer.

What do you think AI will do for your job?

AI will take out certain jobs. This includes drivers of trucks, taxi drivers, cashiers and fast food workers.

AI will create new employment. This includes those who are data scientists and analysts, project managers or product designers, as also marketing specialists.

AI will make existing jobs much easier. This includes accountants, lawyers as well doctors, nurses, teachers, and engineers.

AI will improve the efficiency of existing jobs. This includes salespeople, customer support agents, and call center agents.

What can you do with AI?

AI serves two primary purposes.

* Prediction-AI systems can forecast future events. AI can be used to help self-driving cars identify red traffic lights and slow down when they reach them.

* Decision making - Artificial intelligence systems can take decisions for us. You can have your phone recognize faces and suggest people to call.

What does AI look like today?

Artificial intelligence (AI) is an umbrella term for machine learning, natural language processing, robotics, autonomous agents, neural networks, expert systems, etc. It's also known by the term smart machines.

Alan Turing was the one who wrote the first computer programs. His interest was in computers' ability to think. He presented a test of artificial intelligence in his paper "Computing Machinery and Intelligence." The test asks if a computer program can carry on a conversation with a human.

In 1956, John McCarthy introduced the concept of artificial intelligence and coined the phrase "artificial intelligence" in his article "Artificial Intelligence."

There are many AI-based technologies available today. Some are easy and simple to use while others can be more difficult to implement. They can be voice recognition software or self-driving car.

There are two main types of AI: rule-based AI and statistical AI. Rule-based uses logic to make decisions. An example of this is a bank account balance. It would be calculated according to rules like: $10 minimum withdraw $5. Otherwise, deposit $1. Statistical uses statistics to make decisions. For example, a weather prediction might use historical data in order to predict what the next step will be.

Statistics

  • Additionally, keeping in mind the current crisis, the AI is designed in a manner where it reduces the carbon footprint by 20-40%. (analyticsinsight.net)
  • More than 70 percent of users claim they book trips on their phones, review travel tips, and research local landmarks and restaurants. (builtin.com)
  • According to the company's website, more than 800 financial firms use AlphaSense, including some Fortune 500 corporations. (builtin.com)
  • While all of it is still what seems like a far way off, the future of this technology presents a Catch-22, able to solve the world's problems and likely to power all the A.I. systems on earth, but also incredibly dangerous in the wrong hands. (forbes.com)
  • A 2021 Pew Research survey revealed that 37 percent of respondents who are more concerned than excited about AI had concerns including job loss, privacy, and AI's potential to “surpass human skills.” (builtin.com)
